Sexually Transmitted Disease > Syphilis
The following information is about Syphilis.
Syphilis Defined
A three-stage STD that affects an estimated 120,000 people each year in the U.S. The first symptom appears 10 days to 3 weeks after exposure and is characterized by a painless red (chancre) sore on the genitals or inside the vagina. This sore goes away. Second-stage symptoms include a skin rash and flu-like symptoms. These symptoms will also go away, but it does not mean that the infection is gone. If left untreated, syphilis progresses into a latent stage that can lapse into third-stage, or tertiary, syphilis. Complications from tertiary syphilis are severe: they include mental illness, blindness, heart disease, and death.

- I've been (not) workin' on the railroad. Highlighting this not for the pension story but the discussion of ethics in years gone by - like when doctors lied to patients' spouses about STDs.: ""Wh en forced to make difficult ethical choices, most physicians indicated some willingness to engage in forms of deception. They appear to justify their decisions in terms of the consequences and to place a higher value on their patients' welfare and keeping patients' confidences than truth telling for its own sake. (JAMA Vol. 261 No. 20, May 26, 1989)." Unfortunately, the things they lie about don't always benefit the patient. For example, in the 1989 study, many doctors were willing to lie to the wife of a patient with gonorrhea. The intentions were good, but overly paternalistic, and ultimately could put the life of the patient's spouse in danger"
